Discrimination

We often hear about discrimination almost in every industry. Even the event industry is not immune to that. It is the most happening platform where you meet people from international to local. It could happen to you or anyone you knew. It could be on the basis of any grounds like gender, race, nationality or disabilities.

Despite having many human rights acts and policies to create discrimination and harassment-free in the workplace, there are incidents happening. The Canadian government is stringent with the implementation and set targets with vision. But having ideal goals is different from reality, with a steady increase of migrated people from various parts of the world with different ethnicity, language and race. With multiculturalism, people have different perspectives and practices. The lifestyles and priorities to the values are not same. To ingrain such ideals and make an understanding of its importance is a hard task to achieve but not impossible.

Canada is a diverse country with a majority of multicultural nationalities working in different sectors from the top level to bottom.  It took various steps to establish the equality of the economic, social, cultural and political life of Canada. In recent years, there is a rapid increase in immigration to Canada and these could change the dynamics of it. With discrimination, there is a possibility of a threat to harmony.

Hospitality sector including event industry opens the door for newcomers and many aspiring talents offering various opportunities. There are no barriers to grab and climb the ladders of career to reach the success. International students and people from many ethnicities are studying courses related to hospitality and are been employed here, in the city of Toronto from small establishments to prestigious organizations.

But there are incidents of discrimination happening. Here, I want to highlight two of the major discrimination areas are gender- wage gap and sexual discrimination.

Gender disparity in wages is a widely recognized issue in the world. Women get less pay than the man. It has long term impacts on the women socio-economic life.

Last year, Ontario province passed transparency laws, a significant step closing the gap in pay.
Sexual discrimination is also a major problem in the industry with high chances of sexual advances and harassment at the workplace. There is a thin line of crossing which is always tough to decide or realize the harassment in some situations. The event industry is the vibrant and booming industry where all kind of professionals and people in society meet and network. Working in such industry and providing services means, at times, have to deal with all kind of people and alcohol.

There are many training and awareness programs about discrimination provided at workplaces, organizations to support the victims. Also, government ensuring to take steps by the employers and organisations to protect and provide a safe environment for everyone curbing the discrimination.

Did you face such situation? Comment and share your thoughts.

  1. Jyoti!

You wrote an amazing article. This is really one of the biggest issue in different industry. We all must be aware about the discrimination around us, and be active on how to stop this nor prevented it. Personally, it never happens to me but it did in my fellows. It hurts and it has a huge impact in individuals life. Sometimes it contributes an amount to depression, that is not easy to escape with. For me, it will only be stop if we start from ourselves too.

    Thank you for your blog!
